First Blog

So this is the first blog that I've been asked to write. My only experiences with blogs are the ones that I've accidentally run into while doing research on the Internet and the ones that my friends start when they have kids. Neither of which have seemed very exciting to me but I'm willing to give this blogging business a try. I haven't done the readings yet so I hope that once I get off and running I will see some education uses. Teaching in a first grade classroom, integrating technology seems really difficult at times. I have no idea how I could incorporate this new technology into my daily teaching. I think having 6 year olds start their own blogs would be more of a lesson in keyboarding. Any other ideas on how to use this with first graders?

  1. Maybe first graders could use blogging to write stories about themselves. You could post a topic that they could write about and have each student post a sentence or two. That might be easier since they do love sharing stories at that age. I wouldn't make it to advanced yet. Some of them may have never used a computer in their life.

  2. I've had the same experience as you. I've run into blogs but I don't know much about them. I think it would be tough to blog with 1st graders. The are just learning to write and are still continuing to master their computer skills. It will be interesting to hear from people who have used them at the first grade level.

  3. From one first grade teacher to another I agree. I think we would have to keep it simple. But I must say ,they do surprise me all the time at how easily they can adapt to technology. (Unlike their teacher).

  4. I can't say it would be easy to work with first graders using blogs, but I thought it would be difficult to have second graders use e-mail for e-pals, but they jumped at it and dove right in. You won't know until you try it. I love Sarah's suggestion - use blogs to do a short literary reflection.... after reading a book- have kids blog about their favorite part of the story.

  5. I am pondering the same thing. How could I use this with children who can barely read or write. Maybe with the ones who are reading ? Maybe to communicate with parents ? I think blogging itself would be a year long unit for many of my students :o)

  6. It might be neat to have your first graders type a few sentences about what they learned in school for the week. The parents would then be able to log-in and see what the kids have been doing all week when they were with you. It saves you from having to do a weekly newsletter!
